From Oklahoma Schools to Telehealth: My Clinical Journey

By Kyla C. Kaufman, MEd, LPC, NCC, EMDR Trained

People sometimes ask how I ended up doing therapy over video for families across Oklahoma and Texas. The short answer: two decades in Oklahoma schools taught me where people get stuck, and I built TeleKyla to meet them there differently.

Where it started: Oklahoma schools

I spent 22 years in Oklahoma public education, most of it close to students and families — the morning crisis calls, the IEP meetings, the quiet kid who finally said what was wrong. That work showed me early how much healing depends on feeling safe with the person across from you.

It also showed me burnout from the inside, which is why supporting burnt-out educators is a named focus of my practice.

The education behind the work

I earned my Master of Education from the University of Central Oklahoma, and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in both Oklahoma (LPC #11651) and Texas (LPC #100972), as well as a National Certified Counselor.

I am also an Army Reserves veteran. Serving military members, veterans, and their families is not something I learned about secondhand — I lived parts of that life myself.

Finding EMDR

EMDR changed how I think about trauma. Instead of only talking through the past, EMDR helps the brain reprocess distressing memories so they lose their grip on the present. I am EMDR trained, and I use it with children, teens, and adults, including 90-minute EMDR intensives.

Alongside EMDR, I draw on CBT and IFS-informed parts work, because no single approach fits every person.

Why telehealth

Families in Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Dallas, Austin, and the towns in between shouldn't have to decide between a two-hour drive and going without care. TeleKyla exists so therapy fits into your life: no commute, no waiting room, and the same licensed clinician from the first consult onward.

If you are physically in Oklahoma or Texas, you can book a free 15-minute consult and we will see whether we are a fit.
